Creating the Chill: A Multidisciplinary Approach to Theater
Following a two-year closure, the University of Wisconsin-Stout welcomed theater back to its campus in Spring 2023 with a production of the hit musical Be More Chill.
As part of Stout’s Marketing Communications department, I shot and edited this video highlighting students from various majors coming together to create various aspects of the production.
For as long as I’ve been able to, I’ve loved participating in theater in school and community productions, and this one was no exception. Special thanks to all the students who interviewed with me for this video and to Dayton Feldt and Natalie Watters for providing some of their footage.
“Visit Springfield” Promo (Springfield, Minnesota)
In Summer 2022, the City of Springfield, MN approached me to cut a promotional video for their “Visit Springfield” campaign. I filmed the footage in this video during Springfield’s yearly town celebration, “Riverside Days.”
Hopefully the video convinced you. If so, visit the City of Springfield’s website, and check out their Chamber of Commerce website, too!
A Look at Maida Jaspersen, Art Student
I reconnected with a friend from high school, Maida Jaspersen, who is majoring in studio art at Bethany Lutheran College. This is a brief documentary about her artwork.
I had fun playing with visual storytelling in this piece. For example, I used a vintage Sony Handycam camcorder for some shots of Maida’s artwork. I felt the soft, glowy videotape footage would fit the positive vibes of Maida’s art style.
Check out more of Maida’s artwork at her website and on Instagram @madebymaida.
Uni-Ball Signo Gel Pens: “Just Works”
For this spec ad, I challenged myself to make a high-quality commercial for a highly mundane household object.
Doesn’t get much worse than a pen.
I decided on Uni-Ball because their pens are my favorite (and because I needed to buy pens anyway, but I digress).
The schedule was tight on this project. I shot and edited the whole commercial in three days. After sleeping all day to recover, I was excited about how this ad came together!
DISCLAIMER: This is a speculative advertisement. No parties involved in this production are in any way affiliated with Uni-Ball. All trademarks used belong to their respective owners.
“Bovée Professionals” Shampoo Commercial
This thirty-second commercial was made as part of a project for my Multimedia Technology degree.
The entire commercial was filmed completely in a garage, with a bedsheet serving as a backdrop.
I also designed and printed the mockup shampoo bottles myself, but I obviously didn’t formulate my own shampoo. The bottles were actually filled with shampoo from the dollar store that, let’s be real, would probably destroy your hair.
Stories for the Season: Holiday Recipes
Cookies are probably the most popular among all Christmas desserts. But, have you ever heard of Schmierkuchen or Christmas Stollen? Yeah, me either.
In collaboration with the Brown County Historical Society, State Street Theater Company, and New Ulm Public Libary, I edited “Stories for the Season,” a miniseries that ran on New Ulm Community Access TV (NUCAT) in December of 2021.
This installment is about historical Christmastime recipes from New Ulm, Minnesota locals. All German recipes, of course.
So, break out the electric mixer, kick your kids out of the kitchen, and get started on some great German sweets for the holidays!
Catch NUCAT’s programming on New Ulm, MN cable systems, or on YouTube!
The Viewer-Friendly Interface: a Video Essay
Something you might notice in mainstream movies and TV shows is electronic devices making lots of unnecessary beeping sounds and having software that works nothing like their real-life counterparts.
This video essay I wrote, shot, and edited explores the various subtropes of the “Viewer-Friendly Interface.” Is it an important issue? Not at all, but pedantry is kind of my thing.
Pioneer CD Player Video Guide (VHS)
One of my favorite projects. In the style of an early-1990s instructional videotape, this video demonstrates how to set up and operate a vintage CD player.
Instead of using digital filters, I edited this project digitally, recorded it to an actual VHS tape with an S-VHS VCR, and digitized the tape.
I guess you could call it “digital-to-analog-to-digital” conversion.
Overall, I think it’s pretty authentic. However, had this actually come out circa-1993, it would’ve been like fifteen minutes long.
Like what you see?
Let’s make something.
